The business of books has turned out to be much more of a grind than I thought it would be. It has a lot to do with the digitization of the industry. Each day I get countless email solicitations that promise to catapult me to a best-seller. Some overnight, the others in 60 days. Others telling me how to write better; here's the secret to a captivating opening, learn how to make a readers jaw drop with this technique, or create sinister characters that readers will love-to hate.
Who has time for all this? And, remember nothing is free. I ignore these overtures and keep my focus, most of the time. (Sigh) There was that time that I committed to this marketing genius' (????) program and countless hours per week to sell my books, on the bet that like him and his army of followers I would sell $100,000 in inventory each month.(Double sigh) All that did was get in the way of writing more and had me allocating cash needed I needed to build the critical brand building credentials, necessary like book reviews. The new digital world has all but eliminated book reviews from the local and even national news universe. bb As my late mom would say, "Live and learn."
